CANVAS STRETCHING HANDMADE FRAME MOULDINGS TRAY FRAMING
I’m an exhibiting artist who trained as a picture framer. I gained many years’ experience working in a busy commercial picture framing practice whilst also pursuing my own art practice. In 2021, I set up my own framing workshop (alongside my painting and print-making studio) with the initial idea of framing my own artworks for exhibitions and commercial commissions. I soon realised the technique of joining the mitred frames (more normally used by picture framers, the ‘V’ nail staple) had a tendency to fail when framed art works were being hung and rehung, as happens in the exhibiting process. Also, framed artworks hung in hotels, bars and restaurants were affected by temperature changes, causing the mitred corners to separate and come apart at the front of the frame. Contemporary, deep frame mouldings, in harder woods like oak or sepele, had a habit of splitting when using the ‘V’ nail. I now frame using a modern take on the traditional carpentry ‘dovetail joint’ where a joint is routered and a peg fitted making for a far stronger and tighter joint, giving the frame a superior finish.
